Mould Air, Surface and Bulk Sampling

There are several mould sampling techniques commonly used to assess the presence and extent of mould contamination in indoor environments. Air Sampling:

     Impaction Air Sampling: This method involves using an air sampler to impact mould spores onto a collection medium, such as a petri dish or a tape slide. The sampler draws a known volume of air, allowing for the calculation of spore concentration. It provides information on the types and quantities of airborne mould spores present.

     Spore Trap Sampling: Spore trap cassettes capture mould spores on a sticky surface as air is drawn through the cassette. The collected spores are then analyzed under a microscope to identify the types of mould present and estimate their concentrations.

Surface Sampling:

     Swab Sampling: Swab sampling involves using a sterile swab to collect samples from surfaces suspected of mould contamination. Swab samples can be used for both viable and non-viable mould analysis, allowing for the identification of specific mould species.

     Tape Lift Sampling: In this method, transparent tape is pressed against the surface suspected of mould growth, collecting spores and other particulates. The tape is then affixed to a microscope slide for analysis under a microscope.

     Bulk Sampling: Bulk sampling involves physically collecting a piece of the material suspected of mould growth, such as a fragment of drywall or a piece of carpet. The collected sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis to determine the types and concentrations of mould present.
